Page Breaks
Normally, paging is done automatically by the report engine, but there are several ways to force a page break, either statically or based on a logical expression evaluated while the report runs. The options are described below.
Detail page break condition
A logical expression can be specified in the Detail settings dialog (), on the General tab, in the Page break panel, as the Break condition (logical expression). If the current result of the expression is true, a page break is inserted before the detail section is printed.
Detail starts on new page
In the same Page break panel of the Detail settings dialog, the Starts on new page option makes the detail start on a new page. This is useful when a report contains more than one detail section and a detail should not continue on the page of the previous one.
Group page break options
If you define a group for a detail section, there are additional page break options for the group. They can be found in the Page break panel of the group settings dialog (, then Groups…):
- Break condition (logical expression)
-
If the current result of the expression is true, a page break is inserted before the group header section is printed.
- Always starts on new page
-
Each new group (that is, every change of the group expression’s value) starts on a new page.
- Reset page number
-
The page numbering restarts from 1 when a new group starts. This option is typically combined with Always starts on new page, for example, when every customer’s invoice is printed in one report run.
The Header and Footer panel of the same dialog also contains the Reprint header on new page option. If it is enabled and a group continues on the next page, the group header is printed again at the top of the new page.
Report item page break
Any report item can cause a page break if you turn on the item’s Page break after printing this item option. In the Designer, you can find this option on the Identify tab of the item’s property dialog (). If this option is turned on, the report engine breaks the page after the item is rendered. Within a section, the report items are rendered in the order in which they appear in the report definition, so you can control which items are printed before the page break.
Section options related to paging
The following options can be set in the section settings dialog (). Each of them is available only for the section types listed:
- Page break after this section
-
Report header only. If it is turned on, the page breaks after the report header is printed.
- Starts on new page
-
Report footer only. The report footer is printed on a new page.
- Break to next page if singular
-
Group header only. Protects the group header from being left alone at the bottom of a page: if the group header and the following detail do not fit in the remaining space, the group header moves to the next page. This protection takes effect only in double pass mode.
- Anchor to page footer
-
Group footer and report footer only. The section is printed at the bottom of the page, directly above the page footer.
Batch and sub-report page breaks
In batch mode, a page break is inserted between the reports by default (see Batch Report Mode). For sub-report iteration, the Subreports start on new page report option controls whether each sub-report starts on a new page (see Sub-Report iteration).
